Welcome to Sycamore Class!
Sycamore are taught by Mr Griffiths, Mrs Parsons and Mrs Robinson.
Summer Term 2
Welcome to Summer term 2! Wow, the next seven weeks will be as exciting as the last half term. In Sycamore our new topic is Beast Creator. Within this topic we shall investigate mini beasts, habitats, food chains and lots of interesting artwork. We have lots of activities planned from a visit from a bug lady to a bug hunt over the common to creating our own mini beasts. Watch this space!
Mystery Disappearance in Sycamore!
Many of you will know that in Sycamore we have 2 Giant African Land Snails - Shelly and Dave. Well on Monday morning (05.06.17) when we entered the classroom we had a nasty surprise. The snails were nowhere to be seen. However, they had left quite a mess in the classroom. It looks like they have escaped from their heated tank and had quite an adventure in the classroom before disappearing! They have left a slimy green trail around the classroom and had munched their way through rather a lot of salad and fruit as well as some rather strange items like chocolate hobnob biscuits and a steak pie. Wee are hoping to solve the mystery this week as to what happened and are hoping to find Shelly and Dave. The children have already quizzed Mrs Parsons and Mr Chapman over the incident. We will share the children's work with you on the topic!
A Bug's Life!
This afternoon (06.06.17) we had a visit from Jo who has a variety of mini beasts including stick insects, cockroaches, beetles, millipedes and a tarantula! She talked to the children about how special these animals are as they all have exo-skeletons as they are invertebrates. The children really enjoyed the experience!
Today (09.06.17) Sycamore teamed up with Ash class to go on a bug hunt over Gentleshaw Common. The children thoroughly enjoyed looking for insects and bugs under logs, in the grass and around the trees. Sycamore children really enjoyed buddying up and helping Ash class.
We found lots of ant nests, beetles, woodlouse, bumble bees and a few spiders.
Summer Term 1
What a start to a new term! On Tuesday 25th April , we visited the Sea-life Centre Birmingham as part of our Blue Abyss topic. Before our trip the children decided what questions they would ask the staff and what information they would like to find out.
Whilst at the Centre, we had a behind the scenes tour, where we got to see where protected coral was growing, unborn sharks in their mermaids purses and where the food was prepared by the animal care team. The children made notes in their detective books for use back at school.
Did you know that Giant Pacific Octopus hatchlings are only the size of a grain of rice when they are born!
Multiplication and division facts
In Sycamore we are really trying hard to learn all of our multiplication facts and division facts up to our 12 times tables. Please help your child with their quick recall of them. The children have sheets in their reading journals to help them, when they feel confident they can ask Mr G, Mrs R, Mrs P or Mr F to test them so they can move on to the next one.
Sycamore's Blue Abyss Exhibition
On Wednesday afternoon, to complete our Blue Abyss topic, Sycamore held an exhibition. On display were lots of amazing art work, interesting facts, leaflets, writing about our trip to Sea life Centre, fantastic learning logs, and even a quiz for our visitors! Thank you to everyone that came to look round, and thank you to all the children in Sycamore! It was evident that the children really enjoyed this topic!
Class Pets in Sycamore!
Meet our new Pets in Sycamore, Shelly and Dave! They are Giant African Land Snails, the children have been so excited about them! There is a class Rota of who feeds them and cleans them out.
R.E Day 26th May 2017
Today we looked at several religions as part of our R.E day in the Morning we looked at Islam with Mr. Fletcher and in the afternoon we looked at Buddhism with Mrs. Robinson, where we had a go at meditating like Buddha himself! Our work can be seen in our R.E Book on display in the classroom.
Our English focus at the moment is the book Ottoline and the Yellow Cat by Chris Riddell.
We have shared chapter 1 and 2 so far, and have been busy writing clues in our detective notebooks, we have created character profiles and even created some amazing art work! watch this space for the pictures!
Spring term 2
Sycamore's topic for this half term is 'The Blue Abyss'.
We will be learning about the oceans, creating fact files on animals of the oceans, creating wonderful under the sea art pieces and much more. Our first learning log question is Why is the sea blue? Can't wait to see what the children find out.
On Thursday the children took part in a glow in the dark dodgeball competition held by Mr. Shakesheave and Mr. Huda. This is what the children thought of it:
Bryn - "It was really fun because it was a new thing to do, I've played dodgeball before but it took it to a new level!"
Elsie - "It was fun because when they were playing the match all you could see was the glow in the dark clothing and the dodgeballs"
Noah -"It was like playing dodgeball in a disco! It was epic!"
Maisie - " I really liked it because it was dark and just like a disco as it had music on but you were doing dodgeball instead of dancing."
