Language Curriculum

Our aim at Gentleshaw is to provide children with a Language Curriculum that will capture their interest in different cultures alongside supporting their journey in speaking an additional language. Our language curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their spoken language, with many children applying this knowledge and skills in real life situations such as when on holiday.

Hola!

Our Language Curriculum

Spoken in 21 countries, Spanish is one of the most important languages in the western hemisphere and is the third most spoken language in the world. With this in mind, children across the school will be taught Spanish through a variety of different contexts, allowing children to explore the language and its culture. Although formal teaching begins in Year 3, children in KS1 are introduced to the language through role play activities.

Throughout our Spanish Curriculum we aim to

· Inspire children with the traditions and cultures of Spanish speaking countries

· Encourage children to speak with increasing confidence

· Encourage children to communicate through discussion and asking questions.

In KS1 children will be learning how to greet each other, speak the days of the week and the months of the year, and count to 10. The focus will be on learning through song and story, whilst communicating through various role play activities.

Throughout KS2 children will develop their confidence in greeting each other and introducing themselves through various speaking and listening activities. Children will also be looking at constructing sentences verbally, developing their confidence and pronunciation. Children will be learning to count to 20, speak the days of the week and the months of the year, describe a range of animals and body parts and describe their family.
