sports premium 2022-2023

Physical Education is a national curriculum foundation subject and an entitlement for all children. Academies and schools must use Sports Premium funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. At Gentleshaw Primary Academy our ambition is to provide children with a high-quality physical education curriculum which motivates all students to flourish in competitive sport and other physical activities. We pride ourselves in offering opportunities for students to succeed, achieve and feel self-assured within all aspects of physical activity, which will benefit their health and well-being.

Statement of intent

The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity that promotes a healthy lifestyle

To develop pupils’ self-esteem through the development of physical confidence

To maintain participation in competitive sport

Increase confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

To maintain and stimulate pupil interest in PE through a broad range of experiences both during and outside curriculum time

How this will be implemented

A professional sports coach has been appointed to work within the academy 2 days a week. This allows time for the coach and PE Lead to observe both classes and staff to give feedback on any developments needed. Recruiting a sports specialist means we now have a number of PE specialists who offer advice and support to staff and pupils. They are also excellent PE teaching role models. With the added knowledge of the PE specialist, children now have the opportunity to engage in different sports and their ability is challenged throughout the year.

Purchasing a schools mini bus means that sports competitions are now made more easily accessible. These otherwise may not have been possible without the bus.

A wide range of extra-curricular clubs are available to the children ranging from running to multi-skills club. These worthwhile extra-curricular sessions mean that children have the chance to improve their skill level of different sports in small groups.

A number of children have been chosen to represent the school as Sports Leaders. The leaders will officiate different competitions and events such as the school’s Sports Day. This means that their confidence and leadership skills are increased.

The addition of an outdoor gym means that children lead a healthier lifestyle, increasing their mental and physical well-being. Sports Leaders will be trained to lead sessions using this equipment.

Being able to compete in a wide range of sporting competitions greatly increases participation in school games. The addition of the trust competitions means that this has increased from last year.

PE at Gentleshaw Primary Academy

At Gentleshaw Primary Academy we offer children an opportunity to access all areas of the PE curriculum in suitable settings. Each class is timetabled 1.5 – 2 hours per week for teaching staff to deliver high quality lessons.

Children are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular clubs, which take place during lunchtime and after school to promote a love for physical activity. The clubs offered rotate throughout the year enabling all students to have access to a variety of sports.

We aim to provide staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively. Staff receive regular in service training on PE. We also have a number of staff PE specialists who offer advice and support and are also excellent PE teaching role models.

Sporting endeavours are promoted through the schools twitter account, which can be found on the school website. It promotes the opportunities available to children as well as success within competitions.

We aim to participate in a wide range of sporting competitions through our local cluster events as well as all competitions organised by the Future Generation Trust. The competitions in all aspects of PE greatly increases participation in school games.
